Christopher Henry

Christopher is Red and Murphy's son. He is a professional musician and plays mandolin, guitar, bass, fiddle, and banjo. On the Murphy Method videos, he teaches mandolin and ukulele, and he also plays rhythm guitar for Murphy on several of the banjo videos. Chris's teaches our Bill Monroe Style Mandolin, which was recently released on DVD.

Chris's newest release is a solo mandolin CD titled Monroe Approved. It features many of Chris's wonderful original tunes, including the much requested "Boxcar Door." Joining Chris are some of the top musicians in bluegrass today: Ronnie McCoury, Jason Carter, Mike Bub, Alan O'Bryant, Charlie Cushman, and Casey and Red Henry.

Chris and Casey had their own band for three years, Casey and Chris and the Two-Stringers. They released their first CD in May 2006 called Get Along Girl. You can find it here.

In this picture, Christopher is playing Randy Wood mandolin #3. Bill Monroe owned this mandolin from the time it was made, in 1969, until he died. Murphy bought the mandolin at the Bill Monroe estate auction in December, 2001, and presented it to Red. At the same sale Murphy acquired one of Bill’s gray sport coats, and she gave it to Chris, who is wearing it in the photo!

Chris offers mandolin and guitar lessons in Nashville, Tenn. He can be contacted at 615-495-6835 or cbhenry@visuallink.com.

The October 2007 issue of Bluegrass Now magazine features a profile of Chris Henry, instructor of our Monroe-Style mandolin DVD. If your local music or book store doesn't carry Bluegrass Now you can order a copy online.
